This video is brought to you by Guy, and he will show you how to create a very strong mortise and tenon joint with nothing but a router table. This method can be done on any router table very easily if you just know the steps. Router Bit Guy has mounted a 3/8 inch router bit in his router table to make the mortise and it’s quarter of an inch high on the router table. To make the tenon, he uses a ¾ inch bit and raised it 3/16th of an inch on the router table. Prerequisites Also, he uses a wider piece of plywood as a backer while making a tenon on a router table. He rests that backer plywood against the fence and push it up along with the wood to make the tenon cuts. While making the tenon, Guy makes a first round of test cuts. In these test cuts, he only cuts an eighth of an inch on the end, flip it over and cut the other side and check the fit. Once he has the fit dialed in, he goes ahead and cuts the tenon to the full depth. Rule of thumb: With the router bit raised up a quarter inch high, you never want to go deeper than the width of the bit. Watch the video to learn how to make a tight mortise and tenon joint!

Like many questions of this nature, there’s absolutely no ‘one’ answer and it’s going to depend on many different things. Namely, your needs, what you can afford and ultimately, what your goals are, do you want to become a professional woodworker, a handy man or be more like myself, just being very average or not very good at a lot of different things.
